Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 92% “Hedwig and the Angry Inch may very well be the next Rocky Horror midnight movie”
“A high-powered rock musical that tells the hilarious but emotional tale of an East Berlin transgendered diva on a journey to find stardom in her new home”
“Hedwig and the Angry Inch” occupies an almost extinct movie category: It’s an original rock musical, a “post-punk neo-glam rock musical,” a category almost as specialized as the not dissimilar “Beyond the Valley of the Dolls,” which was a “camp rock horror musical.” Filmed with ferocious energy and with enough sexual variety to match late Fellini.
Hedwig” began life in 1997 as an Off-Broadway musical, and now as a movie with its cult status already established.
Hedwig, a transgender rock singer from East Berlin, fell in love with an American G.I. and underwent a Gender Reassignment Surgery in order to marry him and flee to the West. Unfortunately, nothing worked out quite as it was supposed to – years later, Hedwig is leading her rock band on a tour of the U.S., telling her life story through a series of concerts at Bilgewater Inn seafood restaurants. Her tour dates coincide with those of arena-rock star Tommy Gnosis, a wide-eyed boy who once loved Hedwig – but then left with all her songs. Director: John Cameron Mitchell Cast: John Cameron Mitchell, Miriam Shor, Stephen Trask, Theodore Liscinski
